BULUZI VILLAGE, PERI URBAN LILONGWE

Currently the villagers of Buluzi collect their water from a make shift hole in the ground next to crops fed by chemical fertilizer. The water is also shared with the local goats. Through drinking this water, many of the villagers constantly suffer from diarrhoea. In the rainy season, facilities like these are prone to causing outbreaks of cholera. This is a familiar occurrence in this area. Many of the surrounding villages share similar fates due to broken wells or lack of facilities. Our initial survey indicated that five new wells are required and eight existing wells need to be repaired. The cost to provide one new well is £1000 and to repair a broken well £400.
