LUKUNI, PERI URBAN LILONGWE

Lukuni consists of 8 villages on the outskirts of the Capital Lilongwe. There is a strong community spirit here and a committee has been appointed to address the water and sanitation issues that the villagers face. This committee has constructed 16 wells. However they cannot afford to buy the pumps that are required to make the water safe to drink. Throwing a bucket attached to a rope down a hole is the current method of collecting the water. As Lukini is on the outskirts of the city, charities are reluctant to help. It is the water board’s responsibility to provide water within the city centre. Currently there is no piped water here and there will not be for the next few years. Even if there was piped water available the villagers cannot afford it. This project is to provide one pump to each of the 8 villages. This will cost £500 per pump. To help the people of Lukuni DONATE here.
